Mario has uber lots of items. In his Kart games he has item boxes, and bananas, and OMG, fake item boxes too!!!
In Mario Tennis, Mario's only item is a tennis racket.
In Super Mario Bros., Mario's only items is his feet. He jumps on mushrooms with them and the mushrooms spread their fungal reproductive spores thusly and multiply, creating a delicate balance of life involving Mushrooms and Mario's Feet.
